Why does a roof vent clog faster than a wall vent?

Because the lint has to climb. A roof run leaves the laundry closet, crosses the attic, then turns vertical into the roof jack. Gravity works against the airflow the whole way. In most 1990s and newer Scottsdale tract homes, that path is flexible foil or vinyl transition duct left in from the original build. It sags between joists. Lint settles at the low point and stays there.

Desert dust changes what we find up there. Lint alone is loose and fluffy. Mixed with fine blown dust, it packs into a hard gray mat that won't pull out with a shop vacuum. Roof-jack flappers stick open and fill with that same debris. Sparrows and finches nest in open terminations. Pigeon material shows up too.

Second-floor laundries in north Valley two-stories and townhomes run straight up through the roof. Those runs clog sooner. Six to nine months is reasonable for pets or heavy wash volume. Twelve months covers most single-story homes.

Screened or caged vent caps belong on nothing. They catch lint by design. If yours has one, that alone explains the towels needing three cycles and the dryer tripping its thermal limit in July.
