Why dryer vent installation goes wrong here

Most of it traces to the original build. Flexible foil and vinyl transition duct got left in behind the dryer, then crushed flat in a shallow laundry closet. Attic flex was run loose and sagged. Lint settles at the low point, binds with fine desert dust, and sets up as a hard gray mat instead of loose fluff. Cleaning that line helps for a season. Rebuilding it fixes the cause.

The runs repeat by housing type. Interior closet to attic to roof jack in 1990s and newer tract. Short garage-wall side vents, six to ten feet, in older south Scottsdale and midcentury ranch. Second-floor laundry straight up through the roof in two-story north Valley homes and townhomes. Long soffit runs where the laundry sits center-plan in single-story stucco.

A proper install is rigid metal, joints foil-taped, no screws poking into the airstream. Supported so attic sections cannot belly. Terminations get a working flapper and nothing else. No screens. No cages. Those catch lint and invite sparrows, finches and pigeon debris to pack the hood open.

What moves the work: attic access height, roof penetration versus sidewall, and stucco repair afterward. Replace rather than clean when the duct is vinyl, crushed, or over-long with too many elbows.

Clear rebuilt lines yearly. Six to nine months with long roof runs, pets, or heavy wash volume.
